In his six Suites for unaccompanied violoncello, J. S. Bach invented a style that is specific to that instrument, while exploring all its technical possibilities to the full. Over the years, the Suites have become a monument of the cello repertoire, to which all cellists return regularly. Some of the greatest of them did not record these works until they reached their years of maturity (Casals was over sixty, Rostropovich was sixty-three), while others have not hesitated to present several versions (Yo-Yo Ma, 1990, 1998; Janos Starker, 1957, 1963, 1983). Ophélie Gaillard is among the latter. Her first recording of the Suites, released on the Ambrosia label in 2000, was highly acclaimed internationally by the critics and her performance earned her a French Classical Music Award (Victoire) as a "Revelation" in the Solo Instrumentalist category. Ten years later, at the request of Nicolas Bartholomée, artistic director of the label, she agreed to record a new version on a cello made in 1737 by Matteo Goffriller, a contemporary of J. S. Bach. Ophélie Gaillard had already given us a reference performance of these pieces. Now we discover a prodigiously renewed vision of this masterpiece." http://eboutique.harmoniamundi.com/johann-sebastian-bach-cello-suites.html Recording producer: Nicolas Bartholomée Film director: Guillaume L'Hôte Filmed at Grenier de la Mothe, Bailleul Neuville

What’s a flutist to do when they love Ravel? Though Ravel gave the flute some of its finest orchestral moments, he wrote little for it as a solo instrument… Alas!
Julien Beaudiment and Célia Oneto Bensaid answer this question by borrowing from the repertoire ten of the composer’s greatest works.
Daphnis et Chloé, the challenging Alborada del gracioso, La flûte enchantée or the Sonatine are thus adorned with the combined timbres of flute and piano – so much so that one might be tempted to think these transcriptions could just as well have been the original versions... A beautiful confirmation that, for Ravel, the flute truly is “the happy instrument of light and dream.”

Kévin Amiel, the rising voice of French opera, confirms his talent with a first album of the highest calibre. Nominated for a ‘Révélations’ award at the Victoires de la musique classique awards in 2020 and an Adami artist, the tenor explores the great arias of the 19th century, a period when opera celebrated extraordinary destinies, from the stage to backstage, with Verdi, Gounod, Puccini and Delibes.
Combining a luminous timbre, virtuosity and dramatic talent, Kévin Amiel embodies this demanding art, forged by passion, patience and hard work. With a nod to Pavarotti, arguably the greatest and most popular of opera singers, he slips a few traditional Neapolitan arias into this programme, as if to remind us that the joy of singing must always come first.

Salieri's ‘Cublai, gran kan de' Tartari’ (1788) displays all its heroic-comic loquaciousness, for Giambattista Casti's libretto barely conceals its piquant parody of the European monarchical courts behind its plot set in Cathay. The figure of the Great Khan, in particular, is a droll evocation of Peter the Great. Censored even before its premiere, the work waited to be resurrected in its original version with the help of Les Talens Lyriques and their conductor Christophe Rousset, ardent defenders of Salieri's music.

Vlado Perlemuter and Jean Hubeau’s pupil, Michel Dalberto has established himself during a forty year career as a master. And as an ardent defender of French music he launched on Aparté record label a serie dedicated to Debussy, Fauré, Franck and Ravel. “These recording of works of the four major French composers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, I wish to prove myself worthy of the teachers who used to provide a specific idea of French music made of severity and sensuality, a mixture of rigour and freedom.” After a first opus devoted to Debussy and a second to Fauré (both rewarded with international awards), Michel Dalberto chose the Salle Philharmonique in Liège to record the third part of this collection – that is to say in César Franck’s home town.

COLLECTION DALBERTO LIVE
'Two years ago, near Venice, I played pieces by Debussy on a Fazioli piano, and it seemed obvious to me that this piano provided the ideal sonority for this music made of light and shadow. The idea of recording a recital in a beautiful Italian theatre came as a logical continuation. The "Bibiena" (from the name of its architect, Antonio Bibiena) in Mantua was inaugurated in December 1769 - Mozart gave a concert there a month later. It is, with the San Carlo in Naples, my finest memory of an Italian theatre where I played.'

Born in Geneva in 1987, Louis Schwizgebel won the Geneva International Music Competition at the age of seventeen, and two years later the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. He became internationally known to a wide audience in 2012 when he won second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition. ('In an ideal world he would have been placed joint first,' wrote Tim Ashley in The Guardian.)
The magazine Le Temps had long predicted that 'he will gain his place among the elite of the international scene'. Die Nordostschweiz described him as 'in everything a visionary creator', while The New York Times praised the brilliance of his playing.
There is no doubt that music lovers will appreciate the finesse of this young pianist and poet.

And it is to poetry that Louis Schwizgebel decided to dedicate his first album.
Maurice Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit was inspired by three of the prose-ballads of Aloysius Bertrand. Th pianist Alfred Cortot described this work as 'one of the most astonishing examples of instrumental ingenuity ever manifested by the industry of composers'.
Louis Schwizgebel has also chosen Liszt's transcriptions of three Schubert lieder: 'Auf dem Wasser zu singen', reflecting the motion of the water, the rocking of a boat; the melancholy 'Ständchen'; and the swirling and sinister 'Erlkönig', to Goethe's famous poem.
Closer to the present day, Elis by Heinz Holliger was inspired by the works of the Austrian poet Georg Trakl, with their pessimism and enigmatic symbolism.
The programme ends in a lighter vein, with 'Vallée d'Obermann', the heart and soul of the first (Swiss) book of Liszt's three-part Années de Pèlerinage.

'Poems' by Louis Schwizgebel will appeal to all who appreciate the combination of music and poetry.

Cellist Ophélie Gaillard's recordings are always striking. From 'Dreams' to the Bach Cello Suites, highly acclaimed by the critics, and not forgetting the admirable recording of Bach Arias with the ensemble Pulcinella, she constantly renews the genres she approaches through the perfection of her interpretations.

In the very intense pieces on this programme -- two monumental sonatas, opp. 38 and 99, and a trio with clarinet, op.114, by Johannes Brahms -- she is accompanied by two first-rate soloists, Louis Schwizgebel-Wang, piano, and Fabio Di Càsola, clarinet. Ophélie Gaillard's playing is gloriously melodious, and she sublimates the lyricism of these beautiful works.

Now we discover a prodigiously renewed vision of this masterpiece."
